The Blowtorch. Flame on!

I discovered this recipe in a continued discection of my new favorite book, The Esquire Drink Book. I wanted to give it a try primarily because it has no blowtorch-like qualities, much like Jennifer Beals. It’s credited as coming from The Meadows Inn, Valhalla, N.Y. I’m guessing this venue is no longer there, but the credit means it may have had some form a notoriety during the 1950s. The Blowtorch is a delightfully booze-filled concoction giving forth a rich sweet/tart orange flavor blending with well balanced liquor flavors. Even though it has more liquor than fruit juices, it read like a punch. Next summer I’m serving them by the pitcher and watching the fun. Opting for a half orange wheel, I refrained from applying the recommended garnish as my smoke detector is very sensitive.

3 oz Southern Comfort
3 oz Gin
3 ox Triple Sec
3 oz orange juice
1 oz Grenadine

Shake with cracked ice. Pour into a tall glass. Garnish with a blast from a blowtorch. What a feeling.
