My own concoction. In gearing up for this community I’ve realized that my lone bottle of Vodka would not suffice. As I’ve been reading and educating myself on mixology past and present, I found an interesting an amusing cocktail that required Crème de Violette from The Savoy Cocktail Book. Visiting my local purveyor I discovered that Crème de Violette or Violet Liqueur is only available in the giant 750 ML size. The drink requires one ounce. So what to do with the other 720.4264 ML? Asking the person who sold me the $29 bottle, I was offered this, “Well, it tastes great on vanilla ice cream.” I needed a better solution. I sampled a little and decided to create a vintage inspired cocktail of my own.

Going to my growing booze library I started tasting to see what may or may not work. Crème de Violette. As it’s name suggests has a very floralesque, sweet taste profile. It also has a very strange and interesting grey-blue color, which I love. I mean, every cocktail seems to be brown, red, amber or clear.

I went through a several pairings and decided the cocktail needed a rich tasting component to build out the bottom notes. This was Amaretto it felt true to a 1930s period and added a richer chocolaty dimension to Crème de Violette’s floral, yet somewhat neutral sweetness. I added Vodka, and the juice of 1/2 of a lemon to tone down the intensity of the sweetness and add a touch of brightness. The result was sweet, tart, rich but not overwhelming. I decided on using grapefruit zest instead of lemon which added yet another citrus dimension. Actually, the zest was delicious, too.

And interesting looking. I was really grey. I’m fascinated by the anti-cocktail color, imagining rows of these in martini glasses sipped by pseudo humans in a Ridley Scott inspired futuristic bar.

1 1/2 oz Crème de Violette
1 1/2 oz Amaretto
1 1/2 oz Vodka
1/2 lemon, juiced
Grapefruit Zest

Shake with ice, strain into a chilled martini glass. Run a piece of grapefruit zest around the rim of the glass and add to the cocktail as a garnish. Once you go grey.
